7 reasons to build with bamboo and our experience doing it

Event recording

Table of Contents

Event Summary

Bamboo is strong, flexible, slender, and grows extremely fast, capturing and storing carbon in the process. It is estimated that there are more than 1,500 species of this grass (yes! It is a type of grass, not a tree), although only a few are used in construction. Guadua, Dendrocalamus, Bambú Negro, and Phyllostachys are recommended for this purpose.

We are totally in love with bamboo and would like to see much more of it in modern constructions. If you are thinking of building a house, take part in this event and find out why and how to build with bamboo in Costa Rica.

Speakers

Christian Carranza / Sustainability Engineer

As a Bioconstructor Engineer and Natural Resources Manager, Christian has been dedicated to promoting Bioconstruction in Costa Rica for over 10 years. He has participated in the creation of intentional communities and was the Engineer in charge of La Ecovilla, both in the creation of the concept and in the development of the infrastructure. Christian has led the design and construction of naturally built houses in that community and others. He is a specialist in bamboo structures, natural materials, clay building techniques, natural repellents, living ceilings, and other sustainable and alternative building techniques. Christian loves to share knowledge through workshops. He is the founder of Bioconstruccion Selvas CR, is a member of the collective Tacotal and an ecologist at heart. When not building or designing, Christian is a percussionist, DJ, Acroyogui and master brewer as the creator of Ginger Elixirs in Costa Rica.

Federico Salas / Team Lead Architect

Costa Rica-born architect Federico graduated from the University of Costa Rica in 2017. He has contributed to large-scale projects for several institutions, including the Ministry of Public Education, Ministry of Justice, and Judicial Power. As a private consultant, he worked on a proposal for a multi-modal urban transport station. As leader and co-founder of the citizen’s collective Nostrasladamus, he has collaborated to publish documents on urban mobility by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Policies, focusing on reducing car dependency by promoting pedestrian and active mobility-focused infrastructure and public transportation. Nostrasladamus also collaborated on the redaction of the first law dedicated to cycling mobility and safety in the country. Fede is learning all about bio construction, regenerative agricultural holistic systems, and bamboo design. He believes implementing natural materials, vernacular architecture, and ancient construction knowledge into modern residential projects is the way to reduce the construction industry’s carbon footprint. Fede is a musician and is passionate about the creative process and design behind public spaces, urban communities, cinema, furniture, and origami. He has even tried his hand at creating his own hot sauces.
